World Athletics Championships without South Tyroleans for the first time in 16 years

The World Athletics Championships have only existed since 1983. Until 1991, they were held every four years. Since then they have taken place every two years. So far, ten South Tyroleans have taken part in these title fights. The first South Tyrolean to take part was Erica Rossi from Bolzano in 1983, the last one was Alex Schwazer two years ago in Daegu. He also celebrated his greatest successes when he won bronze twice in the 2005 km walking event in 2007 and 50. In Osaka 2007 and Berlin 2009, four South Tyroleans took part in a World Cup. This year, for the first time since 1997, no local athlete made it into the Italian World Cup squad.

Silvia Weissteiner missed the World Cup standard over 5000m at the Mediterranean Games in Mersin and the meeting in Budapest due to the temperatures being too warm, while Christian Obrist and Lukas Rifesser were not yet able to achieve the standard after their long breaks due to injury. Also the Meran discus thrower Hannes Kirchler came close to the demanding World Championship standard of 64.00m, but narrowly missed it with 62.69m. And Alex Schwazer is banned after his doping affair.

But with Simona La Mantia there is still an Italian with South Tyrolean roots in the squad. The triple jumper from Sicily is the daughter of the former track and field athlete Monika Mutschlechner from Brunico.
