In the starting area at Bruneck's town hall square, the almost 550 participants in the 23rd edition of the South Tyrolean Erdäpfllauf - the fifth stage of the South Tyrolean Top 7 running series - didn't even let the bad weather dampen their spirits. They were rewarded by the weather gods for this, because half an hour before the planned starting signal at 17 p.m. the low tide moved away and when the runners started moving, the sun even peeked through the thick cover of clouds.

Undeterred by the changeable conditions, the two eventual winners Agnes Tschurtschenthaler and Michael Hofer managed to escape early on the very flat route, which was only 60 meters high. Hofer's performance was particularly remarkable. At the halfway point, the 27-year-old was already more than half a kilometer ahead of his worst opponent and direct competitor for winning the top 7 overall ranking, David Andersag. After 57:32 minutes, Hofer finally crossed the finish line at the festival site in Sand in Taufers and then had to wait around two and a half minutes before Andersag tackled the final straight and crossed the finish line after 1.00:06:XNUMX hours. “I ran at my rhythm from the start and soon realized that no one was following me. “That drove me even more to keep up this rhythm,” said Hofer, analyzing his performance after the race. “I am now neck and neck with David Andersag in the top 7 standings. “It will definitely be an exciting duel in the last two races,” says the Eggentaler with certainty. Successful mission to defend the title for the almost record winner For the women's winner, Agnes Tschurtschenthaler, it was the second victory in a row at the South Tyrolean Erdäpfllauf, after she also won the 22nd edition last year. The athlete from ASV Niederdorf also escaped her competitors early on, but had already announced before the start that she had only taken part in a few races recently. “I still enjoy coming here again and again,” the 40-year-old made it clear. This can also be seen in their yield at the South Tyrolean Erdäpflllauf. Six wins from six participations is an outstanding mark, and “only” one triumph is missing to catch up with the record winner Renate Rungger.

“I go from year to year, let’s see,” Tschurtschenthaler smiled when asked whether she has her eye on the title of record winner. “But today it wasn’t so easy for me. My legs felt like rubber at the end, I was pretty exhausted. It was also tough, the sun made it humid on the wet track. Nevertheless, I am of course pleased that I was able to prevail here again,” said the Sesto native, who crossed the finish line seven and a half minutes ahead of second-placed Doris Weisssteiner from SG Eisacktal.

The Andersag family achieved a double podium, as Natalie Andersag, David Andersag's sister, took third place among the women. The two siblings from ASC Berg are currently leading the overall ranking of the top 7 running series. “Maybe it will be an overall victory for siblings, that would be something special,” said Natalie Andersag after the race. “Of course we will both take part in the last two stages, we already have an eye on the overall ranking.” These two stages would be the Soltn Mountain Half Marathon on Sunday, September 25th and the Agefactor Run in Branzoll on Saturday, October 22nd.
