Alfred Monsorno, once South Tyrol's first participant in the New York Marathon, was a very good runner and an even better organizer of running events. Now he's coming up with the idea of a 136-kilometer relay race—from Brenner to Salurn.
The event on June 7th isn't about breaking records, but rather about raising awareness of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases, which are also widespread in Germany. At the same time, the run aims to send a message: exercise keeps the brain fit and can slow the progression of these diseases.
Running against Parkinson's and Alzheimer's
But how is the route between the northern and southern borders to be covered? Monsorno estimates a total travel time of at least twelve hours.A maximum of ten teams with at least ten runners can register for the "Run for Life." Each participant would then cover an average of almost 14 kilometers. Therefore, it seems advisable to form larger teams.
“It’s not about winning.” Alfred Monsorno
“It is possible, however, for a runner to jump in more than once,” explains Alfred Monsorno, “and in any case, the race is not for victory or against the clock.”
The registration fee is €25 per person, and for an additional €25, you'll receive a limited-edition T-shirt. Companies and sponsors can also donate one euro per kilometer. Importantly, the money raised goes to the Alzheimer's Association and Parkinson Aktiv South Tyrol.
