On the challenging, historic Spa-Francorchamps circuit, the McLaren driver finished well ahead of world champion Max Verstappen in a time of 1:42,022 minutes. For Ferrari, led by Charles Leclerc and record world champion Lewis Hamilton, things didn't exactly go as planned at the opening race in the Ardennes.
