Escape from Verstappen? Mercedes drivers deny talks

Amid speculation about Max Verstappen's move to Mercedes, the two current Silver Arrow drivers have denied talks with other Formula 1 teams.

"No," said World Championship fourth-place finisher George Russell before his home race at Silverstone when asked about negotiations with alternative employers. His colleague Kimi Antonelli also assured: "There are no discussions with any other team."

At least publicly, Mercedes has not yet guaranteed either of its two drivers a starting place for the coming season. In recent days, rumors about a possible signing of four-time world champion Verstappen (27) have gained momentum again. "I have thick skin. I don't read much news, I don't listen to rumors," Russell said in response to speculation that he might lose his place to Verstappen.

Verstappen annoyed by speculation

There is no agreed deadline for resolving the contract issue, the 27-year-old stated. "Of course, we want to get things done before the summer break. It will happen when the time is right," added Russell. He has confidence in team principal Toto Wolff. However, he must also keep the team's future in mind. "I'm happy with every teammate and want to stay at Mercedes," emphasized the Briton.

Antonelli (18) also emphasized his strong connection to the German factory team. Mercedes had trained the Italian in the junior team for years and promoted him this season to succeed Lewis Hamilton after his move to Ferrari.

Verstappen fended off all questions about his intentions in the Silverstone paddock. "Nothing has changed on my part," said the Dutchman. His contract with Red Bull runs until the end of 2028, but reportedly has an exit clause tied to his World Championship result. "I'm not saying anything about my contract," Verstappen replied to such questions.
