December 29, 2013, changed the Schumacher family's life dramatically: Michael Schumacher, the Formula 1 superstar, suffered a serious fall during a skiing trip in France, hitting his head on a rock. The now 57-year-old has been undergoing rehabilitation at home since 2014; no information about his health has been released.
Now, an interview in the French sports newspaper The Team It caused quite a stir. For the first time, the rescue pilot who was involved in the operation describes the dramatic moments of the mission. "A paramedic jumped into the helicopter with the doctor and said to me, 'We're getting Schumacher,'" recalls the man, Yannick Daineese. And he adds: "At first, I thought he was joking."

However, it wasn't long before the driver realized that it was indeed Schumacher – and that the situation was serious. "When the operations manager ordered us to remove our microphones and GoPros and forbade journalists from accompanying us, I understood that it was serious," said Daineese.
Surreal atmosphere at the accident site
A surreal atmosphere prevailed at the accident site itself. The slope was immediately closed to all other skiers, leaving only a few people – including the doctors and rescue workers – on site. During the few minutes it took to get the skier into the helicopter, hardly anyone spoke, because, as Yannick recalls, "everyone retreats into their own world."A 25-minute flight then took him to a hospital in Grenoble, where he was transferred for emergency treatment. The helicopter was almost silent during the flight. At that time, pilot Daineese was unaware of the true severity of Schumacher's condition. It was later revealed that the Formula 1 star had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. To this day, Schumacher's actual condition remains unknown to the public.
