Piastri celebrates again, frustration at Ferrari

Oscar Piastri prevailed at the Sakhir Circuit ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell and his McLaren teammate Lando Norris. Charles Leclerc finished fourth in the Ferrari, and teammate Lewis Hamilton fifth. Norris retains the lead in the World Championship standings, while Piastri is now second. World champion Max Verstappen posed no threat, with the Red Bull star finishing no higher than sixth.

Piastri had already won in China this season, where he also won from pole position. The 24-year-old is the only Formula 1 driver this season to have won two races. Norris makes a false start, Verstappen complains Leclerc lost two places at the start from second on the grid, while Russell and Norris overtook the Monegasque. Russell also attacked Piastri, but Piastri covered well in the first corner. Norris received a five-second penalty shortly afterwards for a jump start: the vice world champion had slipped slightly ahead before the starting signal and was therefore well outside his garage when the race actually started. He served the penalty during his first pit stop after the tenth lap, but didn't lose any position as a result – not until Leclerc overtook him on the track. “This is ridiculous” Max Verstappen Verstappen, who had started from seventh place, was now struggling in the midfield and also made an atypically long first pit stop. The Dutchman complained afterward that he had "absolutely no grip" on his hard tires and that he was also unable to brake. "This is ridiculous," said the frustrated world champion. After a second botched pit stop with a six-second stop time, the Suzuka winner was briefly in last place. In contrast, Hamilton squeezed the most out of his Ferrari on fresh medium tires and steadily moved forward.

A safety car deployment shortly after halfway through the race, following contact between Carlos Sainz and Yuki Tsunoda, provided the field with cheap pit stops and brought everyone closer together. After the restart, Leclerc, Norris, and Hamilton, eventually just Leclerc and Norris, battled for third place. On lap 53, the McLaren driver overtook Leclerc and attacked Russell. However, his pursuit was unsuccessful.

Oscar Piastri is the first driver to win two races this season! The Australian triumphed convincingly in Bahrain on Sunday. Ferrari, however, missed the podium, and world champion Max Verstappen was also frustrated.
