When will Carlos Sainz start the big transfer wave?

The dominoes are slowly starting to fall. Before the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg, further cockpit decisions were announced in the Formula 1 transfer carousel.

Pierre Gasly will stay with Alpine, as will Lance Stroll with Aston Martin. Who will be sitting in which car in 2025 and which seats will still be free is becoming increasingly clear. For many, however, it is not happening fast enough. One big question that is blocking other solutions remains: Where will the Carlos Sainz?

The Spaniard, who will leave his place at Ferrari to seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton at the end of the year, will probably trigger a chain reaction as soon as he decides on his new employer. Currently, on paper, seven of the 20 places are still open. According to media reports, Sainz has more or less ready offers from Alpine, Sauber/Audi, Williams and Haas on the table and can choose. He will therefore announce his decision after the race next weekend in Silverstone.

"We are all waiting to see what Carlos decides at the end of the day. But hopefully he can make his decision sooner," said Sauber driver Zhou Guangyu on Thursday in Spielberg. "I think this will shake up the driver market. But before that, I think the people who haven't signed yet can't really give a clear answer or direction as to where they want to go."

Not only the fate of the Chinese, but also that of his teammate Valtteri Bottas and that of Esteban Ocon are directly or indirectly dependent on Sainz's decision. Bottas could end up at Alpine or Williams if Sainz turns down both - or stay with Sauber, which will become the Audi factory team in 2026. Ocon is also valued by those responsible at Sauber and Williams, but according to media reports, he is the favorite for one of the two Haas cockpits. For the other, Ferrari protégé Oliver Bearman have very good cards. Zhou is also said to be in the running.

Two legendary sons are waiting

At Alpine, after the signing of Pierre Gasly the other cockpit is free. The most promising candidate after Sainz is the Australian jack doohan, the 21-year-old son of former motorcycle world champion Mick Doohan. Another candidate is another son of a motorsport legend: Mick Schumacher, the offspring of Formula 1 record champion Michael Schumacher, is currently competing for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship (WEC).

The Racing Bulls have Daniel Ricciardo before the end, his logical replacement would be Red Bull Junior Liam Lawson.. According to the current situation, the most likely candidates are Zhou, Ricciardo, Kevin Magnussen and Logan sargeant next season without a fixed Formula 1 place. "I am currently examining all options inside and outside of Formula 1," revealed the American Sargeant, who still drives for Williams.

The same goes for Magnussen, who will likely have to leave Haas at the end of the season. "I'm 31 years old and I'm starting to think that it would feel empty if I ended my motorsport career after just driving around the midfield of Formula 1," said the Dane. "When I look at Le Mans or the Indy 500 and see some of the winners, they look damn happy and I think there is a career outside of Formula 1."
