Future of Force India remains uncertain

The reason: The takeover of the insolvent racing team by a consortium led by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll is not yet legally binding.

Although the insolvency administrator had agreed to the deal, which was reportedly worth 130 million euros, the consortium had so far only acquired the team's assets. Vijay Mallya and Subrata Roy continue to hold the majority shares. Because of an arrest warrant against Mallya in his native India, some Indian banks are now refusing to give their consent to the sale of the shares. This means that Force India, which appears in Spa completely without team or sponsor logos, even has to worry about the start in the Ardennes.

In order to prevent the sport from ending, Formula 1 owner Liberty Media has, according to information from the specialist magazine auto, motor und sport and the internet portal motorsport.com, developed a solution proposal that will be voted on on Thursday. The consortium can therefore apply for a starting place for a new team that starts from scratch. All points and prize money from the previous season would then be void. In order to make this happen, however, all other teams must agree to the proposal.

If that is the case, the racing team could start at the race in Monza on the first weekend in September with a new name and a different driver pairing. Lance Stroll, son of Lawrence Stroll, may take Esteban Ocon's place; the Frenchman could move to McLaren and take Stoffel Vandoorne's cockpit there. Pole Robert Kubica (previously Williams replacement driver) is being discussed as Stroll's successor at Williams. The drivers have not yet commented on the issue.
