First Spielberg triumph for serial winner Marc Marquez

Spaniard Marc Marquez has underlined his current dominance in MotoGP with his first triumph at the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg.

The six-time world champion won on Sunday ahead of his Ducati teammate Fermin Aldeguer and pole-sitter Marco Bezzecchi on Aprilia. Marquez celebrated his sixth consecutive Grand Prix victory and further extended his significant lead in the World Championship.

After his ninth win in the 9th race of the season, Marquez already leads his brother Alex, who finished tenth, by 13 points. Nine race weekends remain. According to the organizers, 142 visitors attended the event this year. Last year, there were 117.560, and in 150.000, 2023 were recorded. Marquez celebrated his 173.000th victory in the Motorcycle World Championship, and his 97st victory in the premier class. He also won the sprint ahead of his brother in Spielberg on Saturday.

In the Grand Prix, the 1.000th in the history of the premier class, Silverstone winner Bezzecchi defended his lead over Marquez until the 20th of 28 laps. After the overtaking maneuver, Marquez took a comfortable victory on a consistently dry track ahead of Aldeguer, who had overtaken Bezzecchi. Marquez's Ducati factory teammate Francesco Bagnaia finished only eighth. World Champion Jorge Martin (Aprilia) retired after a crash about halfway through the race, and the injury-plagued Spaniard required medical treatment.
