This man knows every vintage motorcycle in South Tyrol

These vehicles are registered in the National Historic Register, managed by the FMI. This certification allows motorcycles that have already been removed from the Public Motor Vehicle Register (PRA) to be registered after passing a vehicle inspection. Since 2005, Stefano Arleoni has been managing the register in South Tyrol, as well as at the national level. The 58-year-old Bolzano native, who teaches mechanical engineering at the Luigi Einaudi Institute, is one of only 38 authorized technicians in Italy responsible for certifications within the Historic Register. For several years now, Arleoni has also been assisted by two consultants, Silvio Danieli and Robert Bicciato. The most important criteria: The vehicle must be at least 20 years old and in a true-to-original and well-preserved condition. “I have certified thousands of motorcycles” Stefano Arleoni In his clubhouse workshop in Haslach, Arleoni tells us about his passion and the work that goes into each registration: "Over the years, I've certified thousands of motorcycles. Since January 1, 2025, I've already certified 110. It's a wonderful thing – you don't do it for the money, but out of passion and for the people. And they thank you from the bottom of their hearts. Nationally, we certify an average of between 20.000 and 30.000 machines per year. I'm very grateful to the FMI for this great opportunity." Today, when someone applies online to have their motorcycle registered, Stefano Arleoni comes into play: "I check the vehicle's characteristics and determine whether it conforms to its original condition," he explains. "Once the process is complete, I send the documents to a national commission, which makes the final decision. If everything is in order, the motorcycle is officially registered." Classic car reporting is important It's not just about prestige: Official recognition also brings other significant advantages. Owners benefit from reduced vehicle taxes, can, under certain conditions, re-register vehicles that have been shut down, never registered, or of unclear origin, and are not required to drive with their lights on during the day. Furthermore, historic motorcycles are permitted to drive in restricted traffic zones where exceptions apply. There are also significant insurance discounts offered through agreements between the Italian Motorcycle Federation and a leading insurance company for certified vehicles. "It's a responsible job, but one that also brings great joy - because it gives new life to so many historic vehicles and allows them to continue telling their story on the road," Arleoni concludes.
