Austrian Mayer wins gold in Super-G

Pyeongchang (SID) Austrian Matthias Mayer has broken the Norwegian dominance in the Olympic Super-G. The Olympic downhill champion from Sochi secured the second gold medal for Austria's ski racers in Jeongseon on Friday with a best time of 1:24,44 minutes. Mayer was 0,13 seconds ahead of the Swiss Beat Feuz, who had won bronze in the downhill the day before. Third place went to the favored Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud (+0), who had triumphed in the Super-G four years ago and had already won silver in the downhill in South Korea. At the four previous Winter Games, the victory in the Super-G had always gone to a Norwegian. The best German, Andreas Sander (Ennepetal), finished eighth, 0,77 seconds behind Mayer, while Thomas Dreßen (Mittenwald/+1,07) came in twelfth. Josef Ferstl (Hammer/+2,37), who sensationally won the Super-G in Val Gardena this season, was disappointing and did not make it into the top 20. "I skied much better than in the downhill. I believed I could do more," said Sander on ZDF. But the tenth-place finisher in the downhill was not entirely satisfied: "I have skied better before. It's a shame that I can't do that at a major event."
