Monday games: DFL boss Seifert sees discussion as exaggerated

Frankfurt/Main (SID) DFL boss Christian Seifert (48) has once again stressed that the Monday games were not introduced for commercial reasons. "They account for less than one percent of total revenue. They were introduced to balance the interests of travelling fans on the one hand and amateur football on the other, which still plays a lot of games on Sundays," the managing director of the German Football League (DFL) told Hessischer Rundfunk (HR). In addition, this relief is needed for the German Europa League starters who play on Thursday evening. There has recently been harsh criticism, especially from the fans. Next Monday, the duel between Eintracht Frankfurt and RB Leipzig will be the first regular Monday game in Bundesliga history. Seifert believes the discussion is exaggerated and advocates for a more objective approach. "We are talking about five of the 306 games of the season. There are no plans for there to be more. And the chance that there will be fewer is greater than smaller. In that respect, we should keep things in perspective," he stressed. Of course, Monday games take some getting used to, Seifert continued, "and with their introduction there may be fears that this is just the beginning and that there will be a lot of Monday games in the future. But we have made it very clear that there are no plans to expand these Monday games."
