Chocolate diet and tears of joy: Wierer is in seventh heaven

Shortly before the World Cup in Antholz, Dorothea Wierer made a bet in an interview. “If I become world champion in Antholz, I will give up chocolate for a month. But not longer. I just like her too much,” she said at the time with a smile on her face. Will the Antholz World Cup heroine follow through with this “diet” plan after her gold appearance in the pursuit?

In any case, she doesn't need that, as she impressively demonstrated once again on Sunday. In the World Championship pursuit, the racer showed her best side: on the cross-country ski trail she fought and ran like a lion, at the shooting range she showed nerves of steel and at the finish she was happy like a real world champion.

The finish was particularly memorable for the racer: she was frenetically celebrated by 15.000 fans in front of a packed grandstand in the Südtirol Arena. “When I ran the last few meters to the finish, it was very emotional,” Wierer explained to SportNews. “My ski men welcomed me, my whole family was there - a tear of joy rolled down my face. Today a dream came true. I never imagined something like this would happen.” Autographs for the journalists Dorothea Wierer grew up in the Antholz Valley, where she took her first steps in biathlon. The 29-year-old has been looking forward to the home World Championships for years, and now she has won the gold medal here. “With everything behind it, i.e. the pressure, the excitement, the many interviews, I can say that this is certainly one of the best successes of my career,” said Wierer, who has long been a superstar at national and international level is. This was also evident from the fact that after the press conference some journalists not only noted the dashing speedster's answers, but also had photos and autographs taken.

Of course, the World Cup isn't over yet for Wierer. On the contrary: the individual competition (on Tuesday), the relay competitions (single mixed on Thursday, women's relay on Saturday) and the mass start (next Sunday) are still pending. Here too, the woman from Pusteria has a chance of winning a medal. End of career or not? “I want to try to continue working like I do today. A certain burden has been lifted with the victory,” says Wierer, who is not yet thinking about what will happen next after the season. In the past she has announced several times that she wants to end her career after the World Cup in Antholz, but recently she has not expressed her determination to do so.

“I'm not worried about it and just want to concentrate on biathlon until the end of the season. My goal remains the overall World Cup, which I absolutely want to win. That will be difficult because a lot of girls are capable of it this year. I don’t want to think about other things because that would just take up too much energy.”
