Giro: Chaves triumphs in Corvara

After 210 kilometers and a total of six mountain passes, the Colombian still had enough strength to pull away from his two closest competitors Steven Kruijswijk (Netherlands) and Georg Preidler (Austria) in the final meters. The tragic hero of the race was BMC driver Darwin Atapuma, who was alone in the open for a long time as a runaway, but was caught two kilometers before the finish line and ultimately fell back to fourth place. The professional cyclist Manuel Quinziato from Bolzano performed bravely on one of the most difficult routes of the Giro and took 69th place in the final classification, crossing the finish line 31 minutes after winner Chaves. “It was a wonderful day,” explained Quinziato at the finish, “and I’m also happy that my body responded so well to this enormous effort. Of course that’s not my stage – but I’ll throw everything into the balance on Tuesday.”
