16. Bike Transalp: South Tyrolean teams extend overall lead

The fastest men among the men were Thomas Stoll and Konny Looser. The two Swiss crossed the finish line after 3:29:10.4 hours. However, yesterday's winners Markus Kaufmann and Jochen Käß from Germany remain the overall leaders. Before the fifth stage they have a lead of 22 seconds over Alban Lakata (AUT) and Robert Mennen (GER). Third are Karl Platt and Urs Huber (GER-SUI/+1.11 mins).

In the master category, the Germans Carsten Bresser and Udo Bölts won for the fourth time in a row. They covered the route from St. Vigil to Alleghe in 3:43.18 hours, distanced the duo Andreas Laner (Gais) and Hansi Grasegger (Grainau/Bavaria) by 4.47 minutes and extended their lead in the overall ranking to 22 minutes. Claudio Segata (Mezzocorona) and Piergiorgio Dellagiacoma (Predazzo) came third. The two Trentinos are also in third place in the ranking, just under three minutes ahead of the South Tyroleans Thomas Piazza and Viktor Paris, who finished fourth.

Walter Platzgummer and Gilberto Perini celebrated their fourth day win in a row at the Grand Masters. They are currently almost unassailable in the lead with 50 minutes ahead of Bärti Bucher and Doug Brown (SUI/RSA). Platzgummer and Perini completed today's section in 3:58.22,6 hours.

Meanwhile, Daniel Jung from Latsch and Kristin Aamodt (NOR) took their third victory in three days in the mixed category. This meant they extended their lead in the category standings to 21 minutes. Mathias Nothegger and Bettina Uhlig (GER) are currently second.

Vice world champion Sally Bigham from Great Britain and Borghild Loevset from Norway are in a class of their own in the women's category. The women's team won for the fourth time in a row and now leads the overall standings with a 26.30 minute lead over Cornelia Hug and Andrea Fässler (SUI). They completed the fourth stage in 4:15.30 hours.

Tomorrow the Transalp entourage will travel from Alleghe (BL) over 73,28 km to San Martino di Castrozza (TN). The fifth stage has the greatest altitude difference of all at 3.137 m.
