Bike Transalp: Laner and Grasegger defeat ex-pros - VIDEO

The South Tyrolean-Bavarian master team with Andreas Laner (Gais) and Hansi Grasegger (Grainau) provided the sensation of the day. With a bit of luck, the runners-up in the overall ranking in the class of drivers who must be over 80 years old defeated Carsten Bresser and Udo Bölts, the former professionals from Germany. After 5:05.01 hours, five second places and one third place, they achieved their first victory at this year's Transalp, 4.26 minutes ahead of Bresser/Bölts. “It just had to come,” says Andreas Laner. “That was a good ending, we are overjoyed.”

Carsten Bresser had a puncture on the last descent but took longer than usual to repair the tire. “Laner and Grasegger stopped and asked if we needed help,” says the two-time Olympian and five-time Transalp champion at the finish. “Then they handed us an air cartridge and a hose so we could continue driving,” said Bresser. “Although we are competitors, we are also colleagues and friends. “We don’t see it all that doggedly,” adds his partner Udo Bölts. “That’s actually the spirit of crossing the Alps,” said the twelve-time Tour de France and four-time Giro participant. “Bresser and Bölts are real buddies,” says a beaming Hansi Grasegger. The pace of the race was very high from the start today, which can also be attributed to the neutral start. “When it was lifted, things really took off,” says Andreas Laner. “We then found a good team and took turns in leading the team.”

Seventh victory of the day for Walter Platzgummer and Gilberto Perini

In the Grand Master category, Walter Platzgummer from Naturns and his partner Gilberto Perini from Castrocaro in the province of Forlí celebrated their seventh daily victory in a row (5:18.05 hours). They can tackle the final stage with a reassuring lead of one and a half hours over the runners-up.

The lead of the leading mixed team over the pursuers (1:43 hours) is even greater than that of the Grand Masters. Daniel Jung from Latsch and Kristin Aamodt from Oslo (NOR) won gold for the sixth time and unintentionally increased the gap to the second-placed teams: one partner each from the second- and third-placed mixed teams had to miss the start today due to injury.

The fastest of the day were Karl Platt and Urs Huber (GER/SUI) in 4:36.06 hours. The overall leaders among the men remain the German marathon champions Markus Kaufmann and Jochen Käß and the duo Sally Bigham/Borghild Loevset (GB/NOR) among the women. The last and shortest stage over 38,55 km/1.269 m altitude leads tomorrow from Rovereto to Riva del Garda.
