Bike Transalp: South Tyroleans take overall lead in the mixed category

The fastest men among the men were Markus Kaufmann and Jürgen Käß. The German marathon champions covered the route over the Plose, the Würzjoch and Mont Rina in 2:51 hours. They took the lead in the overall ranking ahead of defending champion Alban Lakata from Lienz and his German partner Robert Mennen (+20 seconds).

The strongest South Tyrolean, Hannes Pallhuber from Antholz, did not start in Brixen after his partner, former world champion Massimo Debertolis, had to receive seven stitches after a bad fall yesterday near Natz-Schabs.

The German ex-professionals Carsten Bresser and Udo Bölts won in the master category. Andreas Laner from Gais and his partner Hansi Grasegger from Grainau reached the finish line in second place, 3.41 minutes behind. In the overall ranking they are 16.30 minutes behind today's winners. They completed the third stage with an hourly average of 17 km/h. “We were able to keep up with the best until the Plose,” says Andreas Laner. “Then my partner slowed down a little. We recovered well and then attacked again."

In third place, after fifth and fourth place, Thomas Piazza from Ortisei and Viktor Paris from Nals reached the finish in St. Vigil. This was the first podium finish for the two South Tyroleans. “Things went even better today than in the past few days,” says Viktor Paris. “For the sake of fairness, we have to say that our fiercest rivals from Trentino have lost their way twice.”

There were South Tyrolean victories in the Grand Master and Mixed categories. Walter Platzgummer and Gilberto Perini won gold for the third time in a row. They extended their lead in the overall standings to 39 minutes; Daniel Jung and his Norwegian partner Kristin Aamodt achieved their second victory in a row and took the lead in the mixed class by two minutes.

In the women's category, vice world champion Sally Bigham from Great Britain and her Norwegian partner Borghild Loevset were successful for the third time. Bigham had already won the Sellaronda HERO and the Dolomiti Superbike in South Tyrol before starting at the Transalp. Tomorrow's fourth stage leads from St.Vigil in Enneberg over 73,79 km and 2.614 m to Alleghe in the province of Belluno.
