Transalp: Strong start from the South Tyroleans - Brixen on Sunday

Experienced Walter Platzgummer from Naturns won the Grand Master category (together 100+ years) together with his Italian partner Gilberto Perini from Forlí. In the master category, Andreas Laner from Gais and Hansi Grasegger from Grainau in Bavaria achieved second place behind former German professionals Carsten Bresser and Udo Bölts. Thomas Piazza from Ortisei and Viktor Paris from Nalles came fifth in this class. In the men's category, Hannes Pallhuber and Massimo Debertolis came in ninth place. The victory went to Karl Platt and Urs Huber (GER/SUI). In the mixed doubles, Daniel Jung from Latsch took third place with his Norwegian partner Kristin Aamodt. The duo Sally Bigham/Borghild Loevset (GB/NOR) won the women's event.

Tomorrow's second stage leads from Mayrhofen (AUT) over 99,80 km and 2.497 m altitude to Brixen. It goes via the Schlegeis reservoir in the Zillertal and the Pfitscherjoch to South Tyrol. There are also some sliding sections built in because it is so steep. This section from Mayerhofen to the bishop's town is one of the most important Transalp routes of all. From the Pfitscherjoch it goes quickly along forest paths and cycle paths towards Brixen. The cyclists have to cover almost 100 km and 2.500 meters of altitude before they reach the cathedral square.

With Brixen and St.Vigil, two of the eight stage locations are in South Tyrol. The approximately 1000 participants have to overcome 675,98 kilometers and 20.242 meters of altitude in eight days from Mittenwald to Riva del Garda. The teams consist of teams of two. The competition starts and is evaluated in five categories: men, women, mixed, master (80 years in total) and grand master (100 years in total).

The South Tyroleans - this year 27 (a new record) are taking part in the Transalp - have been successful five times since the first edition in 1998. The organizers will distribute a total of €25.000 to the best teams of two.

Transalp: Strong start from the South Tyroleans - Brixen on Sunday

Today, at 9 a.m., the 16th Bike Transalp started in Mittenwald, Bavaria. Around 1000 participants from 34 nations tackled the first stage over 111,08 km and 2.106 m altitude to Mayrhofen in the Zillertal. Including 27 South Tyroleans who were very successful on the opening stage.
