Transalp: South Tyroleans dominate even the hardest stage - VIDEO

In the master class, Andreas Laner (Gais) and Hansi Grasegger (Grainau) regained the second place in the stage to which they had subscribed. Yesterday, due to a technical defect, they had to hand this over to Trentino's Claudio Segata and Piergiorgio Dellagiacoma, who came third today. “It was the hardest stage so far,” says three-time Transalp winner Andreas Laner, “because it didn’t stop. There's no match against Carsten Bresser and Udo Bölts, so we want to try to consolidate second place overall." The two German ex-professionals and serial winners completed today's section in 4:38.01 hours. They were only 3.55 minutes faster than Laner and Grasegger.

The day's winners in the Grand Masters, Walter Platzgummer and Gilberto Perini, who together must be at least 100 years old, only needed 6.46 minutes longer than Bresser/Bölts to reach the stage finish in Crespano (4:42.47). They won for the sixth time in a row and extended the lead in the category standings to 1:23 hours before the final two stages. “The climbs haven’t stopped,” says Walter Platzgummer. “Nevertheless, we had fun.” Daniel Jung from Latsch led a tactically clever race and won the mixed category together with his Norwegian partner, Kristin Aamodt (5:05.16). “We started very cautiously,” says Jung, “because we don’t want to compromise our health so close to the finish in Riva.” Nevertheless, in the end, the 28-year-old from Vinschgau still had the ambition to secure his fifth win of the day in a row, despite a puncture on the Montegrappa.

The fastest of the day today were Markus Kaufmann and Jochen Käß in 4:07.48 hours. The German marathon champions thus consolidated their leading position in the men's ranking, where they lead by almost seven minutes over Alban Lakata (AUT) and Robert Mennen (GER). Sally Bigham and Borghild Loevset (GB/NOR) continue to dominate among the women. So far, the 1000 cyclists from 35 nations have covered 520 km. There are still 156 km and 4200 m altitude difference to go to Riva del Garda. The seventh stage over 118,52 km and 3.005 m altitude leads tomorrow from Crespano del Grappa (TV) to Rovereto (TN). It is the longest section of this year's Transalp.
