Transalp: Two South Tyrolean category wins – bad luck for Hannes Pallhuber

The men's victory today went to the Swiss-South African duo consisting of world champion Christoph Sauser and Max Knox. The two have already won the Cape Epic stage race in South Africa. The strongest South Tyrolean team with Hannes Pallhuber and Massimo Debertolis, ninth yesterday, was unlucky today.

Hannes Pallhuber had two flat tires on the descent from Pfitscherjoch. While catching up with the leading men's teams, former world champion Massimo Debertolis fell heavily on a singletrack near Natz/Schabs. The two slowed down ten kilometers from the finish. After crossing the finish line, Debertolis had to receive seven stitches in his knee in the Brixen hospital. The duo appears in 19th place in the rankings.

Master riders Andreas Laner (Gais) and his partner Hansi Grasegger (Grainau/Bavaria) crossed the finish line at Brixner Graben before the two professionals. They came second behind Carsten Bresser and Udo Bölts from Germany, nine minutes behind. “The pace was pretty high today, especially on the climb to the Pfitscherjoch,” says Andreas Laner. “We lost time on the sliding section, but then caught up again. I know the stage very well. “It was a pleasure to drive it in this weather.”

Thomas Piazza from Ortisei and Viktor Paris from Nalles achieved an excellent fourth place in the master class. “We were in a good mood today,” says Thomas Piazza. “Unfortunately, we temporarily lost sight of each other while filling up with water, which cost us a lot of time,” adds Viktor Paris.

In the mixed category, Daniel Jung from Latsch won in a team with Norwegian Kristin Aamodt. “We felt very good in the morning, approached the race accordingly and went on the attack,” says Daniel Jung.

Transalp series winner Walter Platzgummer and his new partner Gilberto Perini climbed to the top podium in the Grand Master category for the second time in a row and extended their lead in the overall ranking. “We are very satisfied with our trip,” says Walter Platzgummer. “It was a very tough stage.”

Tomorrow's third stage leads from Brixen over 56,92 km and 2.833 m in altitude to St.Vigil in Enneberg. It is the only purely South Tyrolean stage. At less than 60 kilometers, it is the second shortest stage, but one of the most difficult. Coping with 2900 meters of altitude on such a short route is extremely hard for the athletes. The third stage begins with a strenuous climb of 1800 meters almost up to the Plose summit. From Brixen's local mountain it then goes over the Würzjoch and a short, very steep ramp, first on a forest path, later on the road down into the valley and this time very easily on the main road to St. Vigil.

Transalp: Two South Tyrolean category wins – bad luck for Hannes Pallhuber

The 16th Craft Bike Transalp arrived in South Tyrol on Sunday. The second stage was 100 km long (2.497 m) and led from Mayrhofen in the Zillertal via the Pfitscherjoch to Brixen. The South Tyrolean duos did excellently again and achieved two wins and a second place.
