The man ran toward him, and he fell. "People in the finish area should use their eyes more," criticized the two-time Tour champion. His rival Pogacar also described the incident as "unfortunate," even though he didn't see it. No pictures of the collision are available.
Nevertheless, the Dane appeared conciliatory. Vingegaard's attacks on Pogacar were ineffective. But instead of just under two minutes in the Pyrenees, he finished just two seconds behind the defending champion on the legendary giant of Provence. "I actually felt really good today. I was quite happy with the attacks. I'm taking a lot of motivation from that," said Vingegaard after the exciting climbing spectacle in which both tour favorites fought each other with attacks.
Vingegaard doesn't give up
On the rest day, the 28-year-old had declared that he still believed he could win the Tour – despite the gap of more than four minutes. Their duel gave a taste of the upcoming Alpine stages.Messenger spectacle: Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard © APA/afp / BERNARD PAPON
Former world champion Mathieu van der Poel was no longer able to experience the climbing spectacle on the mountain as part of the riders' line-up. The 30-year-old winner of Paris-Roubaix didn't get on the bike before the stage because of pneumonia.
