The King of France: Pogacar wins the Tour

Tadej Pogacar rode convincingly to his fourth overall victory in the Tour de France.

The 26-year-old Slovenian from Team UAE finished the three-week Tour of France with a clear lead of 4:24 minutes over his Danish rival Jonas Vingegaard. Belgian Wout van Aert took the win on Sunday's spectacular and rainy 21st stage on the Champs-Élysées.

The final stage was canceled about 50 kilometers from the finish due to rain and the resulting slippery road conditions on the cobblestone sections in the French capital. This meant that Pogacar had already secured the yellow jersey before the hectic finale, as he had in 2020, 2021, and 2024. To mark the 50th anniversary of the first finish on the Champs-Élysées, the Tour planners had included three crossings of the hilly Montmartre district shortly before the finale, promising even more spectacle.

Despite already securing his overall victory, Pogacar entered the battle for the stage win on the wet surface and put on a show. The world champion, who came to Paris with four stage wins, attacked on the climbs up to the Sacré-Cœur Basilica and reduced the field several times. On the final climb, around six kilometers from the finish, classics specialist and Vingegaard teammate van Aert, who has already suffered several setbacks this year, joined Pogacar and even decisively overtook the climb specialist. Pogacar finished fourth.

A German sensation

German cyclist Florian Lipowitz caused a sensation by finishing the Tour de France in third place overall. "It's a dream come true for me," said the 24-year-old Swabian after this major success. Lipowitz won the white jersey for best young professional. With seventh place at the Vuelta in Spain, the second-biggest cycling race after the Giro d'Italia, last fall and second place at Paris-Nice this spring, the Laichingen native had already caused a stir.
