The queen stage of the Giro delle Dolomiti goes to the Meyers
The second day of the 48th Giro delle Dolomiti on Tuesday was all about the queen stage. With a length of 107 kilometers and a hefty 3100 meters of elevation gain, the race started counterclockwise from Ponte Gardena around the famous Sella massif. Time was recorded on the section to the Pordoi Pass – and the fastest were the German couple Michael and Janine Meyer.

From rain to sunshine: That's the best way to describe the second day of the 48th Giro delle Dolomiti. On Monday, the approximately 400 participants still had to contend with some adverse conditions, but on Tuesday, the weather was fantastic. Just in time for the queen stage, the circumnavigation of the Sella massif, the sun was almost never obscured, and the temperatures were also perfect for a day of cycling. Therefore, during the chrono to the Pordoi Pass (6,7 kilometers / 422 meters of elevation), the cyclists could pedal to their heart's content.
There was a change of lead in the men's race. While Georg Widmann from Tramin won the timed section to Petersberg on Monday, the runner-up from the previous day prevailed this time. German Michael Meyer was the first to reach the Pordoi Pass in a time of 17.35 minutes. However, there was no change in the overall standings: since Widmann arrived second at the Pordoi Pass in 17.56 minutes, 21 seconds behind, the Unterland native remains in first place in the overall standings with a 47-second lead. Third place in Tuesday's stage went to German Matthias Schilling with a time of 18.08 minutes.
The name Meyer also wins among the women
Just a few seconds after Schilling, the first woman crossed the finish line. German Janine Meyer, wife of the men's winner, once again delivered a magnificent performance. The Cologne native needed 18.26 minutes to climb the Pordoi Pass, almost a minute faster than the second woman. That was Carmen Moser from Sarnen (19.25 minutes), while German Julia Jedelhauser, like the day before, took third place (20.24 minutes). This clearly shows that the overall victory will go to these three women, even though Meyer currently holds significantly better odds than her two opponents.Michael Meyer was in a class of his own. © Sportissimus
But that could change as early as Wednesday. After the queen stage, the third stage starts again in Bolzano. Then the Mendola and Gampen passes will be tackled. On the 92-kilometer stage, with 1748 meters of elevation gain, the timed section this time leads from the Kalterer Höhe to the Mendola Pass and is ten kilometers long (662 meters elevation gain).
