Evenepoel wins first time trial, Pogacar takes yellow

Defending champion Tadej Pogacar took the yellow jersey in the Tour de France individual time trial on Wednesday.

Double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel has won the first individual time trial of the 112th Tour de France with ease. The Belgian specialist in the battle against the clock won the fifth stage, which started and finished in the northern French city of Caen, on a flat 33 kilometers.

Evenepoel finished 16 seconds ahead of Pogacar, who thus overtook Dutch classics specialist Mathieu van der Poel at the top of the overall standings. The big loser was former Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard. The Dane lost 1:21 minutes to Evenepoel and didn't even finish in the top ten.

The second and final time trial of this Tour will be spectacular: The 13th stage on July 18 will feature the steep final climb to the airfield in Peyragudes. But first, the breakaway riders will likely have a chance to win the stage on Thursday, covering the 201,5 kilometers from Bayeux to Vire in Normandy.
