Evenepoel in pink: “First mission accomplished”

Rad star Remco Evenepoel happily swapped the world champion jersey for the Maglia Rosa at the start of the 106th Giro d'Italia.

“It’s a nice change. I want to enjoy every moment in it. It's always something special to wear a jersey like this at a Grand Tour and to be recognized by the fans," said the 23-year-old exceptional rider after he the time trial on Saturday won in an impressive manner.

The Belgian, often compared to the legend Eddy Merckx in his homeland, dealt a heavy blow right at the start of the competition for Primoz Roglic. Roglic, a three-time Vuelta winner, was already 19,6 seconds behind on the first 3489,2 of 43 kilometers. Even the two-time time trial world champion Filippo Ganna from Italy was distanced by 22 seconds. “The first mission is accomplished. The pink jersey wasn't the main goal today, but it's a nice bonus. It’s always good to start with a lead,” added the youngster.

Who is supposed to stop Evenepoel in this form? Just two weeks ago he showed his extra class with his superior triumph in the difficult classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Now he returned to the Giro, where he had disillusionedly abandoned his first attempt after 17 stages two years ago. Evenepoel has long since become a world-class driver. He already won the Vuelta last year and now the Giro will follow. And next year the attack on the tour throne is on the agenda. That's the plan.
