Frenchman wins sprint – Mas continues to lead

Bastien Tronchon has secured his first stage win at the Vuelta.

The 24-year-old Frenchman surprisingly won the tenth stage in a sprint finish from the peloton. At the end of the 184,7-kilometer stage from Alcaraz to Elche de la Sierra, Dane Magnus Cort finished second. The favored Belgian, Wout van Aert, came in fourth.

After the rest day on Monday, a breakaway group formed shortly after the start, including the German Jasha Sütterlin. The route led over undulating terrain with three category 3 climbs and a short ascent to the finish.

The seven riders built up a lead of several minutes, but the sprinters' teams prevented the gap from becoming too large. Three kilometers from the finish, the last riders of the group were caught. Freiburg's Sütterlin had already dropped back into the peloton earlier. There were further attacks, but no one could truly break away.

Roglic is focusing on the time trial

In the overall standings, Spaniard Enric Mas remains in the lead after Tadej Pogacar's crash-related withdrawal over the weekend. The 31-year-old has a 1:18 minute advantage over four-time Vuelta champion Primoz Roglic. Austrian Felix Gall is third overall, 1:39 minutes behind. The favorites mostly kept a close eye on each other on Tuesday.

Another opportunity awaits the sprinters on Wednesday. The 153,8 kilometers between Cartagena and Lorca are mostly flat. However, there is a category 3 climb about 30 kilometers from the finish that could invite attacks. The tour concludes on September 13 in Granada.
