Ganna brings joy to Italians at the Giro d'Italia.

Filippo Ganna won the individual time trial of the 109th Giro d'Italia in dominant fashion.

The two-time world champion from Italy won the 42-kilometer stage from Viareggio to Massa, finishing 1 minute and 54 seconds ahead of Dutchman Thymen Arensman. Giro favorite Jonas Vingegaard finished only 13th, 3 minutes behind.

In the overall standings, Vingegaard closed the gap on the leader's pink jersey despite his surprisingly slow time trial. With just over half of the 21 stages completed, the Dane is now only 27 seconds behind Portugal's Alfonso Eulalio. Arensman is now third, 1 minute and 57 seconds behind Eulalio.

On Wednesday, the profile will be significantly more demanding than in the completely flat time trial. From Porcari, the route covers 195 kilometers along the Mediterranean coast heading northwest. It includes four categorized climbs, the last of which is only 12,5 kilometers from the finish.
