Giro delle Dolomiti: Widmann and Jedelhauser unbeatable

Georg Widmann from Tramin and Julia Jedelhauser from Germany continue to dominate the 49th edition of the Giro delle Dolomiti. They also won the fourth stage on Thursday and are therefore the clear favorites going into Friday's final stage.

Thursday's 88,7 km stage with 2.492 meters of elevation gain led into Trentino, into the Pala Group. Starting in Predazzo, the route circled the largest mountain massif in the Dolomites. The section between Bellamonte and Passo Rolle counted towards the overall classification.

After catching a breakaway rider on the flat section of the stage, Widmann and Ralph Ziegaus from Ingolstadt engaged in a thrilling duel, which Widmann only won shortly before the finish. Winner Widmann described it as a "beautiful stage," which, with its flat section at the bottom, had also been a bit "unpredictable." "To cross the finish line in this dream weather and with this panorama" was simply fantastic, raved the rider from Tramin. The sprint for third place was won by Frenchman Jérémy Clément, who finished 22 seconds behind Widmann.

A class of her own: Julia Jedelhauser.

Julia Jedelhauser remains in a class of her own among the women. The German was able to keep pace with the fastest men again on Thursday. She crossed the finish line at the nearly 2.000-meter-high Passo Rolle as the seventh fastest overall, amidst the first chasing group of Widmann and Ziegaus. She had a 3-minute, 10-second lead over the second-fastest woman, Christina Hildenstab, also from Germany. Bianca Morvillo secured third place among the women on Thursday.

The 49th Giro delle Dolomiti concludes on Friday with the 51,3 km stage up the Tschögglberg mountain to the villages of Mölten and Jenesien. The timed section runs from Terlan to Verschneid. The start and finish of the stage are located at the Bolzano Exhibition Centre.
