Giro delle Dolomiti: Widmann and Meyer dominate the Mendel Pass

The sun once again shone on the approximately 400 participants of the 48th Giro delle Dolomiti in the morning. In very pleasant temperatures, shortly after the start in Bolzano at 8.30:XNUMX a.m., the timed section from the Kalterer Höhe to the Mendel Pass was already on the agenda. The challenging climb up the transition between the Überetsch and Nonsberg passes in Trentino is one of the region's most popular passes for cyclists.

One person who knows it very well is Georg Widmann from Tramin, as he lives right in the area – Tramin is just ten kilometers south of Kaltern. And he also showed that he has tackled this pass by bike a few times before. He needed 27.56 minutes for the chrono, putting him 15 seconds ahead of his fiercest rival in the race for overall victory to date, Cologne's Michael Meyer (28.11 minutes).

Austrian Gregor Capellari crossed the finish line on the Mendel Pass, located at 1363 meters above sea level, in third place (28.11 minutes), just hundredths of a second behind Meyer. Widmann now leads the overall standings by 1.02 minutes over Meyer. However, overall victory is not yet assured, as his participation in stages four and five on Thursday and Friday is in doubt due to work commitments.

The overall women's winner is almost certain The race for the overall women's victory is less exciting. Janine Meyer, the wife of Michael Meyer, who finished second in the men's race, continued to deliver a superior performance. She crossed the finish line on the Mendel Pass 28.18 minutes after the start on the Kalterer Höhe, finishing sixth overall.

In the end, she had a lead of just over three minutes over the second-place finisher, Julia Jedelhauser (31.21 minutes) from Marktoberdorf (Germany), who, after two third-place finishes, had the edge this time over Carmen Moser from Sarnen. The South Tyrolean finished third (31.33) twelve seconds behind Jedelhauser. Meyer leads the overall standings with a lead of 6.43 minutes. However, the race for second and third place between Moser (1:21.38 hours) and Jedelhauser (1:22.39 hours) is still open.

The 48th Giro delle Dolomiti enters its fourth round on Thursday. Then comes the stage to the Stelvio Pass. The road to the "Queen of Passes" celebrates its 200th anniversary this year. The race starts in Prato allo Stelvio, and after crossing the pass—the 13,7-kilometer section to the Stelvio Pass, with its 1183-meter elevation gain, is also the chrono of the day—the race heads toward the Umbrail Pass. This also briefly marks a ride on Swiss soil before the stage ends in Glurns.
