Giro d'Italia: Vingegaard is getting closer to the pink jersey

Top favorite Jonas Vingegaard celebrated his second stage win at the Giro d'Italia and is getting closer to the pink jersey.

The two-time Tour champion from Denmark secured victory on the ninth stage with the mountain finish in Corno alle Scala, further reducing the gap to the Portuguese leader Afonso Eulalio.

Vingegaard won after 184 kilometers, finishing twelve seconds ahead of Austrian Felix Gall, who had already taken second place in Friday's mountain finish up to the Blockhaus. Eulalio lost a further 41 seconds to Vingegaard but still holds a lead of 2:24 minutes over the Dane.

Gall cannot counter Vingegaard's attack

The decisive moment came less than a kilometer from the finish when Vingegaard launched the decisive attack. Gall was unable to respond. The pair had previously caught the Italian breakaway rider, Giulio Ciccone.

Vingegaard aims to win his third Grand Tour, the Giro d'Italia, after the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España. Only seven riders have achieved this feat.

After the rest day, the Giro continues on Tuesday with the individual time trial over 42 kilometers from Viareggio to Massa.
