In the time trial: Roglic is catching up at Vuelta

Spaniard Enric Mas kept his rival Primoz Roglic at bay in the Vuelta individual time trial and took a big step towards overall victory.

On the 32,1-kilometer stage from El Puerto de Santa María to Jerez de la Frontera, Mas finished 12th, losing a good half minute to the Slovenian (4th), but retained his red jersey. The 31-year-old now has a lead of 1:37 minutes. Roglic improved his overall position to second place. Austrian Felix Gall is third, 3:01 minutes behind Mas.

The coming days will feature more mountain stages, where Mas has so far been stronger than Gall and four-time Vuelta champion Roglic. For the Spaniard, it would be his first overall victory in one of the three Grand Tours.

Two more tough mountain challenges

The stage win went to Swiss-Liechtenstein professional Stefan Küng. The best German rider was Georg Steinhauser in 11th place. The course was relatively flat, with only minor hills interrupting the fast route. It was the only longer individual time trial of the Vuelta. The tour had begun with a short nine-kilometer time trial in Monaco.

The battle for the red jersey will be decided over the next two days. Friday's 210-kilometer stage finishes with a mountain-top climb at Peñas Blancas. The following day features the queen stage, where the riders will have to ascend a total of 4.850 meters. The Vuelta a España concludes in Granada on Sunday.
