No Olympics: Pogacar foregoes Paris

Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar will not be taking part in the Olympic Games.

The clear winner of the Tour de France was again removed from the Slovenian squad. Domen Novak will take his place in the road race.

"Unfortunately, Tadej Pogacar will not be there as he has cancelled his participation due to extreme fatigue," said Uros Murn, coach of the Slovenian Olympic team, in a statement. In addition to Pogacar, the Slovenians will also have to do without three-time Vuelta winner Primoz Roglic, who had to withdraw from the Tour de France after an injury following a fall.

The 25-year-old Pogacar, who won bronze in Tokyo, would have been one of the top favorites for gold in the individual time trial on Saturday and in the road race a week later. His biggest rival in the Tour de France, the Dane Jonas Vingegaard, had already canceled his participation in June. On Sunday, Pogacar became the first professional cyclist in 26 years to win the double of Tour de France and Giro d'Italia.
