Mega deal in cycling? Evenepoel in talks with Red Bull

The young Belgian star is – once again – being linked with the German team. "We're at the Tour. The Remco rumors are already commonplace. I have no idea what's true," said Evenepoel's teammate Maximilian Schachmann.

Speculation surrounding Red Bull and Evenepoel (25) has been swirling for more than a year. But this time, one of cycling's biggest deals could actually go through. The contract of aging captain Primoz Roglic (35) at Red Bull is expiring. And Evenepoel is only tied to Soudal-Quick Step until 2026. According to rumors from Belgium, the time trial world champion has already submitted his request to transfer. There are no problems with the equipment either, as both teams are using Specialized.

Disappointments in the Classics and the Giro Red Bull officials are keeping quiet about the renewed speculation. "I'm always surprised and amused. Evenepoel would definitely guarantee the German team some victories. Successes that have been lacking far too often this season. The Classics season was disappointing. And at the Giro d'Italia, Nico Denz only managed a single stage win, after Roglic withdrew after several crashes. That probably didn't please the major Austrian sponsor, because with a reported annual budget of €45 million, Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe operates on a par with the industry's top teams.

Pressure from Salzburg? "In the professional world, we'd like to be a bit further along, but it doesn't happen overnight," says team manager Ralph Denk, who points to the team's excellent junior program. High-flyer Florian Lipowitz serves as a shining example. Many small improvements have also been made in areas such as mental performance, nutrition, and aerodynamics, which aren't so obvious at first glance. In any case, he doesn't feel any pressure from Salzburg.

Denk also harbors the dream of winning the Tour de France one day. He has already achieved this at the Giro and the Vuelta. His best result in the Tour de France is Emanuel Buchmann's fourth place in 2019. Given Tadej Pogacar's dominance, however, a Tour triumph currently seems unrealistic, even with Evenepoel.
