After bike theft: Vingegaard defends red jersey

Two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard defended his lead in the overall standings at the Tour of Spain. However, after the third stage, the Dane is tied for the lead with stage winner David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ).

Behind the Frenchman and the Dane Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), Vingegaard (Visma Lease a Bike) finished third after the 134,6 kilometers from San Maurizio Canavese to Ceres in Piedmont, Italy. Gaudu overtook his rivals Vingegaard and Pedersen in the final corner of the uphill sprint.

"I just stayed with Pedersen, tried it in the last corner, and got past him," said Gaudu. Vingegaard added: "It was a tough finish, I'm happy to have made it through."

Police investigate

Just hours after the stage win the previous day, Vingegaard's team, Visma, was burglarized. Several bicycles were stolen from the mechanics' truck, the team announced. Police have reportedly begun an investigation into the incident.

Vingegaard won the second stage of the Vuelta a España on Sunday despite a crash and also took the lead in the overall standings. The 28-year-old is also the favorite for the overall victory. The fourth stage of the Vuelta a España leads from Italy to France, covering 206,7 kilometers from Susa to Voiron. It is the longest stage of this year's Vuelta a España.
