After tragic accident in Mezzocorona: Investigation underway

Following the fatal accident involving 19-year-old cyclist Sara Piffer, a car driver is being investigated for homicide in road traffic.

The 70-year-old man, who comes from Trentino, overtook another car and collided head-on with the 19-year-old, a spokesman for the local police told the German press agencyThere were several witnesses who observed the accident and confirmed what happened.

Piffer was on the road with her brother between Mezzocorona and Mezzolombardo for training when the accident occurred. The brother was not injured and was obviously able to avoid the oncoming car, the police officer continued ( Stol reported).

Dismay also in South Tyrol

The news of the young athlete's death was met with dismay in the region. "Our condolences go out to the family, the children and the entire community," said Trentino's governor, Maurizio Fugatti (Lega). He also expressed his deep sadness over the tragic accident on behalf of the province of Trento.

Fatal accidents are a common occurrence in cycling.
