At the Tour of the Alps, 25-year-old Marco Frigo from Bassano del Grappa celebrated his first professional victory. In the third stage on Wednesday, which covered 145,5 kilometers from Sterzing to San Candido, Frigo prevailed against Jai Hindley (Australia) and Derek Gee (Canada).
Frigo broke away with a breakaway group as early as kilometer 18 and then launched his own personal breakaway attempt, crowning it with a stage win. Frigo ultimately finished 19 seconds faster than the opposition, securing a surprise victory for the Israel-Premier Tech team rider.
Great panorama at the Tour of the Alps.
"We knew today's stage would be a good opportunity to try. It was important to be alert to get into the right group," Marco Frigo said at the end of the stage. "The breakaway was very large, but I was determined to attack solo if the opportunity arose. Last year, I lost a stage at the Vuelta because I hesitated. The best option for me was to attack solo and ride at my own pace."
In the overall standings, however, everything remained the same: Michael Storer (Tudor Pro Cycling Team) confidently defended the green jersey. The next stage leads via Sexten to Obertilliach.
