Bad fall: Tour star Vingegaard forced to abandon

Two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard's season ended after a crash. He was injured and taken to hospital.

The rider, who was second overall at the time, crashed in a roundabout on Sunday's 15th stage, about 20 km from the finish. Vingegaard was in pain; his right arm and shoulder were bandaged, and the Dane was taken to an ambulance. A few hours later, the diagnosis came: Vingegaard had broken his collarbone.

The captain of the Visma team was once again Tadej Pogacar's closest challenger this year. The Slovenian finished second behind Remco Evenepoel.

Vingegaard was 4:30 minutes behind the dominant leader Pogacar in the overall standings and thus on course for the podium in Paris. The Dane had won the Tour de France in 2022 and 2023, and finished second overall in the previous two years. This year, he wanted to challenge Pogacar for the victory again, having already won the Giro d'Italia.

The crash occurred on the way to the final climb to the Plateau de Solaison. Vingegaard was the first to fall, followed by his teammate Sepp Kuss, Pogacar's teammate Felix Großschartner, and another UAE Team Emirates rider, Isaac del Toro. The Austrian and the Mexican were able to continue, however.

Pogacar is now almost impossible to catch.

Evenepoel took the stage win on the first mountain stage in the Alps. On the Plateau de Solaison, the Belgian outsprinted Pogacar and Del Toro. In the overall standings, Pogacar's lead over his nearest rival has now grown to five minutes. Evenepoel is currently second, with Del Toro just under a minute behind in third.
