Van der Poel has to abandon the Tour de France

Mathieu van der Poel dropped out of the Tour de France due to health problems.

The Dutchman is struggling with pneumonia. "Examinations revealed that Mathieu is suffering from pneumonia. In consultation with the medical staff, it was decided that he cannot continue the race. His health is a priority," his team, Alpecin-Deceuninck, announced ahead of the 16th stage, which starts in Montpellier and finishes on Mont Ventoux.

Van der Poel was one of the protagonists in the first stage of this Tour de France. He won the second stage in Boulogne-sur-Mer and wore the yellow jersey. After the 15th stage, however, he was almost an hour and 40 minutes behind leader Tadej Pogacar in the general classification. At the same time, he appeared to be experiencing cold symptoms. "On Monday, his condition deteriorated significantly. In the evening, he developed a fever. He was therefore taken to the hospital in Narbonne for examinations," said team officials. According to doctors, the 2023 road world champion will need to rest for at least a week.
