Van der Poel's breakaway attempt stopped

Former cycling world champion Mathieu van der Poel narrowly missed his third stage win at the Tour de France after a spectacular breakaway attempt over about 170 kilometers.

The 30-year-old was caught just over a kilometer from the finish and had to watch as Belgian European Champion Tim Merlier celebrated his second stage win of the 112th Tour de France. Italian cyclist Jonathan Milan, finishing second, missed out on another victory after the previous day's victory. On the ninth stage, Merlier's compatriot Arnaud de Lie finished third after the 174,1 kilometers between Chino and Châteauroux.

There were no changes in the overall standings. Tadej Pogacar remains at the top of the standings, 54 seconds ahead of Belgian double Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel and 1:11 minutes ahead of Frenchman Kevin Vauquelin.

Climbing trip is coming

The Tour organizers are offering cycling fans the first challenging climbing show in the Massif Central for the national holiday. 4450 meters of elevation gain await. Among other things, seven category II climbs are on the agenda. Never before have so many climbs of this medium difficulty category been included in one day.
