Fourth stage win: Vingegaard extends Giro lead

With his fourth stage win, Jonas Vingegaard has extended his lead at the Giro d'Italia.

The overwhelming favorite from Denmark prevailed on stage 16 ahead of Austrian Felix Gall. Australian Jai Hindley finished third in the mountain finish in Cari, Switzerland. Vingegaard launched the decisive attack shortly before the halfway point of the nearly 12-kilometer final climb.

In the overall standings, Vingegaard already has a 4:03 minute lead over the new second-place rider, Gall. Thymen Arensman, who finished fourth on the Cari stage, is third. The Dutchman is 4:27 minutes behind Vingegaard.

On Wednesday, the race returns to Italy. After 202 kilometers, the professionals will reach Andalo in the province of Trento. The profile is significantly less demanding, which is why breakaway riders are hoping for a chance. In the end, a fast climber could take the victory.
