Vingegaard wins on the mountain – Giro triumph within reach

Cycling star Jonas Vingegaard won the 20th and penultimate Giro stage in impressive fashion, putting him on the verge of his first victory in the legendary Italian tour.

Ten kilometers before the finish, the 29-year-old Dane broke away from his competitors on the final descent of the 200-kilometer mountain stage between Gemona del Friuli and the winter sports resort of Piancavallo and confidently defended the pink jersey.

“On the last day in the mountains, we were determined to go for the win,” said a satisfied Vingegaard at the finish. It was his fifth stage victory in this year’s Giro d’Italia. In the overall standings, the 2022 and 2023 Tour de France winner continues to lead by 5:22 minutes over Austrian Felix Gall going into the final stage. Former Giro winner Jai Hindley of Australia is third, 6:25 minutes behind.

The final stage of the 109th Giro d'Italia will take place this Sunday in Rome. The route will lead the peloton 131 kilometers through the Eternal City. Traditionally, the wearer of the pink jersey is not attacked on the final stage.
