Before the Alpine test: Bettiol makes the Tifosi cheer

Italian cyclist Alberto Bettiol won the 13th stage of the 109th Giro d'Italia.

The 32-year-old, who won the Tour of Flanders in 2019, celebrated his second overall victory in the Giro d'Italia after a solo ride in Verbania on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy. He had already won the Giro once before, in 2021. Norwegian Andreas Leknessund finished second after 189 kilometers from Alessandria, while Belgian Jasper Stuyven came in third.

The top riders in the general classification race took it easy – and finished well behind the leading group. Afonso Eulálio remains in the lead. The Portuguese rider holds a lead of just over 30 seconds over two-time Danish Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard.

A change in the overall standings is possible on Saturday. After several relatively flat days, things will get serious for the professionals: Stage 14 features the first mountain stage in the Alps, culminating in a summit finish. Between Aosta and Pila, there are three Category 1 climbs and one each of Category 2 and 3. The tour concludes on May 31 in Rome.
