Vos wins yellow jersey, favorites unlucky

After a close finish, Marianne Vos reclaimed the yellow jersey in the third stage of the women's Tour de France. The Dutchwoman finished second, just behind her compatriot Lorena Wiebes.

A breakaway group led by Canadian Alison Jackson led the race for long stretches, but was caught by the peloton after the intermediate sprint. Vos received six bonus seconds in the overall standings, finishing second, and swapped the top spot with Mauritian Kim Le Court Pienaar, who had narrowly overtaken her the day before. In the points classification, however, the 2012 Olympic road champion was edged out by stage winner Wiebes.

A few kilometers from the finish line, a crash involving Demi Vollering shook up the field. The 2023 Tour winner is once again considered one of the favorites this year and was in contention for victory in the largely flat stage. After her crash, the Dutch rider crossed the finish line at the back of the field in visible pain, but only dropped one place in the overall standings.

Italian star gives up

Because the crash occurred within the five-kilometer zone before the finish, Vollering did not lose any further time – apart from the credits for the top three riders – thanks to the corresponding rule for flat stages.

Italy's greatest hope suffered a bitter disappointment: Elisa Longo Borghini, the winner of this year's Giro d'Italia, had to give up due to a gastrointestinal infection.
