Widmann and Jedelhauser win Giro delle Dolomiti

The 49th edition of the Giro delle Dolomiti has come to a close with victories for the favorites. Georg Widmann from Tramin and Julia Jedelhauser from Germany also won the fifth and final stage, securing a commanding overall victory.

Widmann crossed the finish line alone on Friday's timed section from Terlan to Verschneid. "That climb was tough," said the rider from Tramin, who was "completely satisfied" with his week. If someone had told him before the Giro that he would win all five stages, he wouldn't have believed it. "The other riders aren't resting either; Ralph kept me on my toes all week." Ralph Ziegaus from Germany also secured second place on Friday and was 2 minutes and 38 seconds behind Widmann in the overall standings after five stages.

Julia Jedelhauser continued her dominance in the women's race on the final day. Only four men were faster than the Allgäu native, who finished more than six minutes ahead of second-place Julia Tanner. "I was about three or four minutes faster each day than my coach had calculated," she said happily after her commanding overall victory. Jedelhauser put up a good fight against the men on every stage: "I wouldn't have thought I could keep up with the men relatively well for five days."

"There's something for everyone."

The winner really liked the “overall concept” of the Giro: races, a great landscape – “there’s something for everyone.” Widmann also praised the “ambience and format” and even perceived “a bit of a Tour de France feeling” due to the good organization.

Organizing committee head Bettina Ravanelli spoke of a "perfect week" and a "very harmonious atmosphere" among the participants from 25 nations. Even a rider from Japan took part. This year, she said, particular emphasis was placed on local cuisine and small cultural highlights, with the aim of presenting South Tyrol "in the best possible light."

The anniversary Giro will take place next year. Georg Widmann hopes to participate in the 50th edition as well. Julia Jedelhauser promised with a smile after her victory: "I'll be there. Definitely."
