Widmann and Jedelhauser also triumph at the Gardena Pass

The queen stage of the 49th Giro delle Dolomiti took place on Tuesday as the second stage. The 107,5-kilometer route, with 3080 meters of elevation gain, circled the Sella massif in a counter-clockwise direction. The current overall leaders, Georg Widmann and Julia Jedelhauser, dominated the timed section from Colfosco to the Gardena Pass.

The Sella Ronda, a circuit of the Sella massif, is practically a must for every cyclist in South Tyrol. On Tuesday, the approximately 300 participants of the 49th Giro delle Dolomiti witnessed why. Starting in Waidbruck, the route followed a counter-clockwise course, tackling the Sella Pass, the Pordoi Pass, the Campolongo Pass, and finally the Gardena Pass. While the climb involved significant elevation gain, breathtaking Dolomite panoramas were a constant companion.

The 6,3-kilometer climb from Colfosco to the Gardena Pass, with its 442 meters of elevation gain, served as the timed stage for the overall standings on Tuesday. Overall leaders Georg Widmann and Julia Jedelhauser secured their second stage victory. Widmann, from Tramin, once again had to battle with Ralph Ziegaus, but managed to cross the finish line at the Gardena Pass in 18:36 minutes, 13 seconds ahead of the German (18:49 minutes). Frenchman Jérémy Clément finished third (19:36 minutes), while Eduard Rizzi from Sarnen came in fourth (19:56 minutes) and Bulgarian Stefan Vasilev finished fifth (20:03 minutes).

Jedelhauser, in turn, shows no weakness.

Julia Jedelhauser built up a significantly larger lead, reaching the Gardena Pass in fourth place overall. The Bavarian from Marktoberdorf crossed the finish line after 19 minutes and 41 seconds, more than three minutes ahead of Julia Tanner from Neumarkt (22 minutes and 58 seconds), who thus maintained her second place in the overall standings. As in the first stage, the German Christina Hildenstab again finished third, completing the Crono in 23 minutes and 19 seconds. Fourth place went to the Italian Bianca Morvillo (23 minutes and 53 seconds), and fifth to the German Astrid Weirauch (25 minutes and 31 seconds).

The 49th Giro delle Dolomiti features its shortest stage on Wednesday. Starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Bolzano Exhibition Center, the route covers 20,5 kilometers (948 meters of elevation gain) to the Ritten Arena in Klobenstein, with the section from Rentsch to Weber im Moos (11,5 kilometers and 791 meters of elevation gain) being timed. The stage is short for a good reason: afterwards, participants have the opportunity to create their own itinerary and explore South Tyrol.
