Second Giro stage win for Frenchman Magnier

Opening stage winner Paul Magnier also won the third stage of the Giro d'Italia in Bulgaria on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Frenchman from the Soudal team prevailed in the mass sprint after 175 km from Plovdiv to Sofia, ahead of Italian Jonathan Milan (Lidl) and Dutchman Dylan Groenewegen (Unibet). Unlike the previous days, there were no serious mass crashes this time. Saturday's winner, Guillermo Silva, retained the pink jersey before it was transferred to Italy.

The sensational Uruguayan rider for the Astana team continues to lead by four seconds over Germany's Florian Stork (Tudor) and former Giro winner Egan Bernal (Netcompany) of Colombia. Top favorite Jonas Vingegaard (19th), Felix Gall (30th), and several other podium contenders remain ten seconds behind the leader.

Now comes a day of rest.

The three-week tour continues after a travel day on Tuesday in Calabria. There, the professionals face a 138km stage with a long category 2 climb. Adam Yates, one of three UAE Team Emirates riders injured in Saturday's crash, did not start the final stage of the opening triple-header. The British stand-in captain suffered a concussion, while his teammates Jay Vine and Marc Soler sustained fractures.

The team had already been forced to forfeit their nominal captain, Joao Almeida, due to illness before the start. Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain/concussion) and Andrea Vendrame (Jayco/vertebral fractures) from other teams were forced to withdraw from the race following the mass crash on a descent.
