South Tyrolean double victory at the start of the Transalp

In the master category there was a victory for the German-Italian team Bernd Hornetz (Karlsruhe) and Werner Weiss (Eppan). Last year's winners not only won in their category, but after 3:24:00 hours they even took overall victory on the first stage ahead of the favored men's winners Hans-Peter Obwaller and Johannes Berndl (AUT/GER), who were 1.39 behind Minutes crossed the finish line in second place.

“We didn’t hope to win the stage in the general class as masters,” says Werner Weiss. “We are leading the overall standings and that is very pleasing. However, we don't want to win this by hook or by crook. We let ourselves be surprised,” said the Eppan native.

In the women's race, Marina Ilmer from Tschars and her German partner Beate Zanner from Gera won the first stage with a lead of 3.58 minutes over Bettina Schorn and Lisa Pleyer from Austria after 3:48.14 hours.

“We had a great day,” says Marina Ilmer. “We didn't have to suffer, although we had minor problems over the Kühtai. I hope that tomorrow we feel the same as today, then we would be very happy.”

In the Grand Masters, the 2010 Transalp winner Marco Poier from Kurtinig and his German partner Erwin Hickl crossed the finish line in second place after 1,7:3 hours, 37.26 seconds behind the German-Swiss winners Harry Nussbaumer and Peter Hafenrichter.

Favorite victory in the mixed category: The duo Pia Sundstedt from Finland and Carsten Bresser from Germany won 3th place after 41:40:7 hours for the Italian Olympic fencing champion Dorina Vaccaroni and her partner Giuseppe Cadorin (+12.43 min.)

On Monday to Brixen

Tomorrow the second stage will take place from Sölden over 123,87 kilometers and 2.998 meters in altitude to Brixen. The start is at 9 a.m. and arrival at the cathedral square is scheduled for around 12.25:XNUMX p.m. The aim is to overcome the highest pass of the tour.

Day two begins with a 1.300 meter climb to the Timmelsjoch at 2.509 meters. The first refreshment station is on the Timmelsjoch, where you can enjoy the panorama. The descent, however, has it all: the route winds its way down to St. Leonhard in Passeier in many tight bends. It is one of the most technically demanding sections of the TOUR-Transalp 2012. The Jaufenpass that follows offers a pleasant, consistent climb in contrast to the Timmelsjoch, but should not be underestimated with a difference in altitude of 1.400 meters over around 20 kilometers. From Vipiteno it goes slightly downhill through the Isarco Valley. However, in order to avoid the main roads in front of the cathedral city of Brixen, the participants have to tackle another nasty, short climb to Schabs at the end.
