The new turf season begins in Meran

The first part of the thoroughbred racing season ends on June 25th. The Grand Prix of Meran South Tyrol is on the program this year on September 24th, while the Maiaoktoberfest ends the racing season with the autumn races of the Haflinger horses on October 8th. The 2023 racing calendar The start of the spring season will take place on April 23rd this year, as the spring races in Milan are canceled due to the redesign of the racing tracks. This is followed by another 10 days of racing on Sundays in April, May and June, with the highlights of the racing calendar being the Great Hurdle Race of Italy, the Great Hunt Race of Europe, the Ezio Vanoni Prize and 3 other group races on the weekend of March 3rd. and June 4th. Prize money of over 66 euros will be awarded in a total of 800.000 flat and steeplechase races, for which participants from Austria, Switzerland, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and France are expected. The first day of racing 6 flat and steeplechase races for thoroughbreds and a race for Haflinger horses are on the program at the start of the Meran turf season on Sunday, April 23rd. The focus of the sporting program is the hunting race for the Nonstal Prize (3.800 meters, 17.000 euros in prize money). Led by last year's Grand Prize runner-up Gangster De Coddes, 6 steeplers from the Czech Republic, Switzerland and Italy are taking part in the hunting test. A total of 52 horses from 3 nations compete in the 6 races of the day. At the beginning of the racing day there is a flat test for Haflinger horses, in which 6 mares take part. The main race 6 experienced steeplers take part in the hunting race for the Nonstal prize. The starting list is headed by Gangster de Coddes. The gelding from the Aichner racing team took second place in the Grand Prix of Meran South Tyrol last year and is already in good shape according to his trainer Josef Vana Jr. He is ridden by Josef Bartos and accompanied in the race by his two stablemates Notti Magiche (l. Matusky) and Zio Reginaldo (J. Kratochvil). The opponents face a difficult task against this trio. Raffaele Romano saddles for the Rössl Team Sky Constellation racing team (G. Agus) and for the Tanghetti Dorian Tango racing team (D. Pastuszka). Both horses were able to impress in training. Bornasco (M. Huber) from the racing team of Swiss trainer Jürg Langmeier completes the small but high-class starting field.
