Merano is ready for the start of the season

How are preparations for the equestrian season going? Giovanni Martone: We're well prepared for the season, which kicks off over the Easter holidays. The slopes are in excellent condition, and the mere fact that we managed to secure 28 race days and even a small increase in prize money makes me optimistic about the future. Last year saw another boom in attendance. What can visitors look forward to this year? Martone: As always, our target audience is families and tourists. To offer them an attractive program, we rely on tried-and-tested features on race days. Live music in the pit area, racecourse tours, Haflinger horse races, and entertainment for children provide the framework for the sporting program. Are there any new offers? Martone: This year, children have the opportunity to spend the whole day in the pony village at the racecourse under the supervision of trained staff and to experience an interesting afternoon there. What new opportunities arise from the Province of South Tyrol’s acquisition of the racecourse? Martone: It's well known that significant investments are needed in the infrastructure. The racecourse and the horse village were built 90 years ago. Many facilities are no longer up to date and need to be replaced or completely renovated. What work do you think needs to be addressed immediately? Martone: The renovation of the horse village and the grandstands are, of course, a priority. But innovations are also needed in areas that are essential for a modern racecourse. “Our prize money is still attractive for Central European racing teams.” Giovanni Martone Which areas are you thinking of? Martone: The racecourse's irrigation system and grooming machines would have to be completely replaced. The same applies to the television system, which provides images for the national horse-riding channel and to betting shops, thus serving as a showcase for the racecourse. An underpass between the horse village and the racecourse would also be essential. What are your sporting expectations for the 2025 season? Martone: I'm confident that, despite the crisis in Italian steeplechase racing, we'll be able to offer high-quality races again this season, both in terms of numbers and quality. Our prize money is still attractive for Central European racing teams. What does it take to make Italian obstacle racing competitive again? Martone: The problems must be addressed at their root. This means training courses for jockeys and grooms. With the necessary personnel, flat trainers will also become more interested in steeplechasing. Interview: Leo Haller
